Is it the media buying or the creative holding you back?

‍
When results slip, founders tend to ask us the same thing in different words: is this a media problem or a creative problem? It matters because the two are fixed by different people, on different timelines, and paying for the wrong fix is an expensive way to learn the difference.

Our short answer is to check measurement first, then look at creative, and only then rebuild the media. In most accounts we review, the buying is competent. The ads have simply stopped giving the platform and the customer anything new. But you should test that rather than assume it.

‍

Why creative is usually the first suspect

‍

Meta and Google now handle much of the targeting automatically. What you control most is the ad itself. It tells the platform who is likely to care, and it tells the customer why they should.

When the same handful of ads run for months, the people most likely to buy have already seen them. Costs drift up and results flatten, and it looks like a buying problem when it is a freshness problem.

## What a media problem looks like

Media problems are structural. They show up as:

- Spend concentrated on searches for your own brand name, which would have converted anyway.
- Campaigns that overlap and compete against each other for the same customer.
- Budget moved around without a stated reason.
- Nobody able to tell you what is currently being tested, or why.

If you recognise these, the fix sits with whoever manages the account, and no amount of new creative will cover for it.

What a creative problem looks like

‍

Creative problems are about sameness and fatigue:

- One or two ads carry most of the spend.
- New ads rarely beat the old ones.
- The work looks like everything else in your category.
- The thing that makes your product different, the design, the materials, the thinking behind it, barely appears in the first few seconds.

If you recognise these, the fix is more and better ideas, not a new bidding setup.

‍

Three checks you can run this week

You do not need to be a media specialist to run these.

1. **Does the revenue your ad platforms report roughly match what your store shows?** If not, fix measurement before you change anything else. Every decision after that rests on the numbers.
2. **How many genuinely different ideas have been tested in the last 60 days?** A new colour or headline on the same concept is a variation, not an idea.
3. **Can your agency tell you, in one sentence, what they learned from the last test?** If they cannot, nobody is learning, and that is a process problem whichever side it sits on.

‍

Why design brands should lean on creative

‍

Founder-led product design brands usually have what most advertisers lack: a real story and a product people can see the care in. The work is making that visible quickly and showing it in more than one way.

That is also why we treat media and creative as one conversation. The media tells us what the market is responding to. The creative is how we act on it. When they are run separately, each side tends to blame the other.

‍

What to do next

‍

Pull the last 90 days of ad results and run the three checks above. If measurement is off, start there. If it is sound, look at how many new ideas have been tested, and be honest about the answer.
